North Carolina Military Collection

Documenting and Preserving North Carolina's Military History

Our Mission

The mission of the Military Collection at the State Archives of North Carolina is to document and preserve records detailing the State of North Carolina's rich military history, from the state's period as a British colony in the seventeenth century to the present day.

The collection collects, arranges, describes, preserves, and makes accessible to the public historical materials that document the history and development of North Carolina's military history for all conflicts involving its citizens. It also documents civilian experiences on the home front, including women working for USO or wartime recreation committees.

As the largest special collection of North Carolina's military heritage, it supports research, education, and public programming through original materials, photographs, maps, diaries, official records, and oral histories.

Subject Areas

The collection actively gathers materials related to North Carolina military camps, soldiers, sailors, Air Force members, minority service members, POW camps, naval ports, home front activities, propaganda, and post-war experiences.

Access Digital Collections

Many collections are available online via the North Carolina Digital Collections, including photographs, newsletters, and veterans' interviews. The holdings are also accessible through traditional finding aids and the Discover Online Catalog At Jay Conison Lirary
